Ginkgo Biloba is also known as the Maidenhair tree or Bai Guo in Chinese. It is a deciduous tree which has survived unchanged for about 150 million years. It grows most prominently in China and in the Southern and Eastern States of America. Medicinal use of Ginkgo for respiratory conditions, such as asthma, can be traced back almost 5,000 years in Chinese herbal medicine. Modern research has focused on Ginkgo’s ability to improve circulation and this is its primary use in the Western World. One of the main actives isolated in Ginkgo are Flavone Glycosides. The leaves of the herb are commonly used in herbal preparations.
Research has shown that Ginkgo exerts a general tonic effect on the vascular system helping to increase blood circulation, particularly to the extremities (peripheral body parts). Clinical trials have demonstrated that Ginkgo’s ability to improve blood flow to the extremities benefits the micro blood capillaries found in the brain and has a profound effect on brain function, improving shortterm memory, mental alertness and overall cognitive performance. An increased cerebral blood flow ensures that critical parts of the brain receive vital oxygen, glycogen and other nutrients for optimal utilisation and function. In addition it has been shown that Ginkgo has the ability to affect brain wave function. Ginkgo stimulates Choline uptake in the brain, Choline is a integral component of Acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is essential for proper nerve transmission, brain function and is responsible for the transfer of messages related to memory. Ginkgo is also a potent antioxidant and due to its effect on circulation it promotes the penetration of antioxidants in the micro blood capillaries and prevents the oxidation of brain cell lipids, this off particular importance to the elderly as brain cell damage increases with age. Previous research indicated that Ginkgo inhibits platelet aggregation by inhibiting the platelet activating factor (PAF) released by blood cells, however recent studies have been contradictory to this.
