Digestive enzymes are secreted in various parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, helping to digest and breakdown food and unlocking vital nutrients that are then absorbed into the blood stream. Various digestive disorders can affect the body’s capacity to manufacture these enzymes and can cause a deficiency which can lead to poor digestion, malabsorption of nutrients, allergies and tolerance to food products, poor bowel function and diarrhoea. The elderly are more prone to digestive problems as the body’s ability to produce enzymes decreases as we grow older. Various foods can provide a source of enzymes, however they must be consumed raw as heat can destroy the enzymes.
BETAINE HYDROCHLORIDE
Hydrochloric acid is produced within the stomach and has several functions including activating protease enzymes, allowing for the absorption of Vitamin B12 and many minerals and sterilising the food that enters the stomach. As people age the production of hydrochloric acid declines which can inhibit digestive function.
PROTEASE
Protease describes an enzyme that acts on proteins breaking them down to their amino acid components. This proteolytic enzyme is found in the stomach, pancreatic and intestinal juices.
BROMELAIN
Bromelain is a natural proteolytic enzyme derived from the stem of the pineapple. It is a sulphurcontaining compound with a variety of applications including the treatment of inflammatory conditions.
PAPAIN
Papain is a natural proteolytic enzyme derived from papaya. It has been found to be helpful for those with intestinal damage due to gluten intolerance leading to malabsorption.
LIPASE
Lipase is an enzyme that digests and breaks down fat. It is found in the stomach and pancreatic juices and fat containing foods. Fat is broken down in several stages by different fat enzymes in the stomach and intestines before it is in a form ready for absorption.
AMYLASE
Amylase is the first digestive enzyme to act on food in the body and is found in the saliva, pancreatic and intestinal juices. Different types of the Amylase enzyme breaks down specific forms of carbohydrate sugars and starch, such as lactose, maltose and sucrose.
CELLULASE
This fungus-derived enzyme acts to break down cellulose (fibre) and cereal glucans and promotes digestion. This enzyme is particularly important to digest plant foods.
