Formed in 1973, Nelson Honey & Marketing (NZ) Ltd (formerly Nelson Apiaries Ltd) is a family owned business operated by Philip and Evelyn Cropp. Philip’s grandfather started producing honey from hives in the Nelson area on a part time basis over 100 years ago. With Philip and Evelyn's son Matthew now contributing, Nelson Honey brings together 4 generations of beekeeping knowledge and experience.
Over the past 25 years the company has grown substantially in production and has diversified into the natural health market.
In addition to the NectarEase product range, Nelson Honey also produces Active Manuka Honey and other natural products, the company has continued to maintain a healthy year on year increase of its honey-based products. These are available in over 400 retail outlets (Natural Health Food shops, Pharmacies, Gift Shops etc) in New Zealand with a high level of brand awareness for NectarEase and Active Manuka Honeys in particular.
Product is exported to markets all around the globe including the United States, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United Kingdom with many enquiries coming for the establishment of distribution outlets in Europe and Asia. Nelson Honey is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in it’s products and to adding value to the health benefits of honey.
For many years honey has been prized for its healing properties and sweet taste. All honey types contain hydrogen peroxide, which is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. But the amount of hydrogen peroxide can vary widely from one honey to another.
Dr Peter Molan from the University of Waikato has been investigating the antibacterial properties of honey for more than 10 years. He has made some significant discoveries and awarded a M.B.E for his work. His work includes the discovery that Manuka honey has additional antibacterial properties known as non-peroxide activity. The combination of hydrogen peroxide and the non-peroxide activity in Manuka honey has many health professionals now choosing to use Manuka honey in the treatment of wounds and infections.
