Brain and eye development
Early infancy is recognised as a critical period for both brain and eye development and growing evidence suggests that Omega 3 and Omega 6 play an important role in neurodevelopment and Omega 9 is recognised as important in heart health and improves immune function. Furthermore, the long-chain omega-3 fatty (DHA) is an essential structural component of the brain. Researchers at the University of Milan report that infants whose formula contains long- chain polyunsaturated fatty acids have better brain development than children who do not receive DHA . The observation supports earlier findings that there is a direct correlation between the DHA concentration in the red blood cells of infants and their visual acuity. It is recommended that infants who are not breastfed be fed on a DHA-enriched formula or with Omega 3 supplementaion. Paradox provides a safe and effective way for infants to obtain the correct balance of stabalised Omega long chain fatty acids, a particularly important issue since a dislike of fish is not uncommon nor are fears of fish consumption due to the presence of mercury and other contaminants. *1,2,3
Immune system development
Infants are born with an immature immune system. Important characteristics of the immature immune system are an inadequate ability to produce certain cytokines (hormones that activate the immune system), researchers conclude that daily fish oil supplementation between the ages of 9 and 12 months accelerates the maturation of infants’ immune systems and may be helpful in avoiding the development of allergic disorders.*4
Studies show the fundamental role Vitamin D plays in disease and health. Vitamin D deficiency is now recognized as a pandemic and can silently develop in childhood affecting normal development in bones and other body systems. Paradox Omega Babies provides a large proportion of the RDA for Vit D3 in 6months +.*5
Omega Babies is the latest product from Paradox Omega Oils in Ireland. The idea was developed by Dr Geoff Hayhurst who realised that the most important Omegas for healthy growth and development are hardly ever made available to infants and toddelrs.
“Although these days parents are getting more information than ever before about good nutrition, giving infants the right start in life is still a huge challenge,” said Dr Hayhurst who researched and developed the product.
“And our affluent modern lifestyle has brought its own problems with a growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes by the time children reach adolescence.
“Omega 3 is one of the hottest buzz words in nutritional medicine. There is increasing scientific evidence to support the role of long chain omega-3s in normal growth and development as well as health maintenance. Mothers’ breast milk naturally contains significant quantities of long chain omega-3s for babies’ health. “They are essential fatty acids which are not produced by the body and can therefore only be obtained in the diet or by supplementation. Research has shown that children low in omega-3's are significantly more likely to be hyperactive, have learning disorders, and to display behavioural problems. As the brain is fully developed in the first few years of life it is essential that the omega fatty acids necessary for its development are given to children as early as possible.”
A recent study from Oxford showed that children who received a fatty acid fish oil supplement showed significantly better progress in both reading and spelling than children who received a placebo.
In addition a study in Belfast, showed that children taking an Omega-3 supplement were associated with highly significant reductions in ADHD-related symptoms. “The problem of administering the oils to infants and younger children has been overcome by the unique pump delivery system,” Dr Hayhurst explained. “A pump dispenser delivers a measured daily dose of omegas which can be mixed directly into children’s foods so there is no need to measure on a spoon, and as capsules are only suitable for children who are 5 years plus, this is ideal for both the busy mother and the young infants!”
After 20 years working with patients who were always asking what they could take to improve their health, Dr.Geoff Hayhurst decided to investigate the apparent paradox that two of the healthiest populations on earth, the Eskimos and the Mediterraneans have diets extremely high in fat. He was convinced that the fusion of the different good fats in their respective diets could create a synergy in this new and unique nutritional supplement- The result was PARADOX OIL.
Geoff was educated at The Royal Belfast Academical Institution and later studied Dental Surgery at Manchester University. After graduating in 1981 he practiced Dentistry in England but his career was cut short after a serious road traffic accident left him needing extensive spinal, pelvic and hip surgery. It took several years to rebuild his life and his career and in that time he retrained as an Osteopath. He returned to Ireland in 1985 where he set up his Osteopathy practice in Belfast. He continues to treat patients on a daily basis.
When he originally researched and developed Paradox Oil, it was initially aimed as a supplement to improve bone and joint health, but it soon became apparent after the first pilot study with his patients that this particular blend of oils was demonstrating impressive improvements in the health of many of the other major body systems.
Patients who were also sharing the oil with other members of their family were also reporting remarkable improvements in their general health and wellbeing. Geoff rapidly realised that he had developed a product that can improve health and vitality across a whole range of age groups and range of body systems. This "one size fits all" approach means that all members of the family can enjoy the extensive benefits of this new supplement, from age 3 to age 93 !
