Product Description

  • Colpermin is the market leader for the treatment of IBS. Colpermin contains clinically proven natural peppermint oil in a special formulation to help manage the symptoms of IBS. Colpermin offers dual action relief, relieving the painful spasm and the uncomfortable bloating of IBS. The special coated capsules pass through the stomach intact and target relief directly where it is needed most in the large intestine.

    How does Colpermin work?
Dual action Colpermin has been specially formulated in a prolonged release capsule to help manage the symptoms of IBS. Its double action helps relieve both the painful abdominal spasm and uncomfortable bloating of IBS. Firstly Colpermin has a relaxing effect in the bowel muscle to relieve the knotted feeling and cramping pain in the stomach. At the same time, Colpermin helps disperse the pockets of trapped wind that can cause that uncomfortable bloated feeling.

The capsule’s enteric coating ensures that it remains intact as it passes through the stomach acids and the small intestine. Once in the large intestine the active ingredient, peppermint oil, is slowly released for maximum effect and relief.
By easing the symptoms of IBS, Colpermin helps you to carry on with your life.

Warning

  • The diagnosis of IBS should be confirmed by a doctor. You should consult a doctor if:
    - you are 40 years or over with changed symptoms or a long gap since an attack,
    - blood passes from your bowel,
    - you have nausea or vomiting,
    - you are pale/tired,
    - you have severe constipation,
    - you have fever,
    - there has been recent foreign travel,
    - you are pregnant or possibly pregnant,
    - you have abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding, or difficulty or pain passing urine,
    - you have loss of appetite or loss of weight.

You should consult your doctor if new symptoms occur or there is a lack of improvement after two weeks.
If you are pregnant or breast feeding you should not take IBS medication unless directed by your doctor.

Colpermin is usually well tolerated, though very occasionally heartburn and anal irritation can occur. If you have a tendency to suffer from heartburn and the capsules seem to make it worse, you should stop taking Colpermin and return to your Doctor or Pharmacist for advice.

If the capsules are chewed or broken before being swallowed, the peppermint oil may irritate the mouth and gullet. In very rare instances where someone is allergic to peppermint oil or menthol, a rash, headache, slow pulse rate, clumsiness or shaking may occur. This is more likely when alcohol has been consumed.

Colpermin contains refined peanut (arachis) oil.

Directions

  • If your Doctor or Pharmacist has given you instructions on how to take Colpermin, do as you are directed, but remember:
    - Do not chew or break the capsules. Take them whole with a glass of water
    - Do not take the capsules immediately after food
    - Do not take them at the same time as indigestion remedies as they may damage the capsules

If you do not have instructions from your Doctor or Pharmacist, the following dose may be taken:
    ADULTS
One capsule should be taken three times a day with a glass of water. Do not take the capsule immediately after food. If the pain and discomfort is more severe, the dose can be increased to a maximum of two capsules three times a day.

Colpermin is not suitable for children.

Normally these capsules may be needed for only 1 or 2 weeks, but sometimes the discomfort may continue. If the discomfort and pain persist for more than 2 weeks, then you are advised to see your Doctor to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong.

Review

  • What Is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is an extremely common complaint, estimated to affect about 9 million people in the UK. IBS is actually a collection of symptoms which most commonly include painful abdominal spasm, griping, cramping, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation. The symptoms of IBS occur because the intestines begin to contract too tightly. You may experience one or more of these common symptoms at one time or another.

    What Are the Symptoms?
    ABDOMINAL PAIN
This is the most common symptom of IBS. It is often experienced just after eating or within a couple of hours. Relief is generally felt when you pass wind or open your bowels.

    KNOTTED BOWEL
A knotted uncomfortable feeling experienced in the lower part of the abdomen.

    BLOATED FEELING
Most sufferers feel bloated and may have to loosen their clothing. Other sufferers cannot finish off a meal because the stomach can feel full. This bloating feeling is due to trapped wind.

    DIARRHOEA & CONSTIPATION
Both these are common symptoms and some people suffer with alternate attacks of diarrhoea and constipation. Some sufferers experience a sudden need to rush to the toilet which can interfere with their social life. In addition there may be a feeling that the bowels have not completely emptied even when a motion has been recently passed.

    What causes IBS?
Nobody is really sure what actually causes IBS. Stress and anxiety are thought to be precipitating factors. Other contributing factors are believed to be intolerance to some foods or stomach upsets.
Most experts agree that IBS is part of a vicious cycle of events. With today's lifestyle it is often difficult to avoid stress and too much stress can bring on the symptoms of IBS. The anxiety this causes only adds to the problem and you may become trapped in an ongoing cycle without thinking that your symptoms could be part of this process.

What can I do about it?
It's not easy, but reducing the amount of stress and anxiety in your daily life can go some way to relieving your symptoms.
Relaxation exercises, a relaxed approach to life, regular meals and trying to eat properly can also help. By rushing or skipping meals it is easy to upset the normal digestive process.

Eating more fibre by substituting brown bread for white, eating a high fibre cereal for breakfast or eating more fresh fruit can also help. Other suggestions include drinking plenty of fluids, cutting down on tea or coffee and taking regular exercise.

Colpermin is a medicine that can help relieve the painful spasm and bloating of IBS
