Why use Manuka Honey?
Since the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey, this remarkable food has been associated with abundance and vitality. Today honey is considered such a potent force, it is being used in major hospitals to combat serious wound infections.
- Clearing wounds
Active manuka honey has two antibacterial properties, hydrogen peroxide and a unique manuka factor (UMF), which may work together to provide outstanding healing. Used to quell over 60 bacteria and fungi, active manuka honey has shown considerable success in clearing wounds and resolving infection.
- Highly stable
Active manuka honey's antibacterial action is highly stable, penetrating deeply into infected wounds and promoting the growth of white blood cells. At Christie hospital in Manchester, mouth cancer patients have been treated with honey to protect them from MRSA, the superbug currently claiming thousands of lives in British hospitals annually.
- Trusted remedy
One of nature's trusted remedies for over 4000 years, active manuka honey assists digestion by coating and soothing the gastro-intestinal tract, shielding it from damaging conditions such as acid reflux. Good levels of antioxidants also help to reduce inflammation in the gut.
- More potent
It has proved effective against the helicobacter pylori bacteria which cause gastric ulcers: the activity rating of 10+ indicates that its antibacterial strength is equivalent to a 10 per cent solution of phenol - considerably more potent than most honey. As it is relatively acidic, active manuka honey provides an environment where bacteria do not flourish.
Containing iron, zinc and B vitamins, active manuka honey has restorative powers that make it a desirable - as well as delicious - food for those recuperating from illness.
- Retains moisture
Honey's marvellous gift to skin lies partly with its capacity to retain moisture, enabling skin to heal more swiftly with less chance of scarring. Good for burns, grazes, rashes and stings, active manuka honey maintains a protective barrier and appears to promote better tissue healing.
- New growth
Even on more serious wounds, such as deep surgical cuts or skin ulcers which are difficult to keep free of infection, active manuka honey works effectively to restore health, preventing cross-infection and nourishing new skin growth. Active manuka honey also avoids further damage to wounds by providing a soothing, germ-free layer that stops dressings from sticking.
- Soft and smooth
For everyday skin care, active manuka honey brings rejuvenating benefits by softening and smoothing skin, helping to resolve conditions such as sunburn, acne and eczema.
Most honeys have some anti-bacterial properties but Manuka Honey tops the scale. The activity rating of this honey is 10+, which means that its potency as an anti-bacterial remedy is equivalent to a 10% solution of phenol - and our honey tastes better on toast than antiseptic does.
Green Bay Harvest is an independent, family-run UK business specialising in the supply of organic functional foods. I founded the company in 2005 because I wanted to increase awareness and use of foods with remarkable nutritional and health benefits as part of our daily diets.
We source our ingredients as much as possible from our friends and contacts who are organic pioneers in their field and we take time to build personal relationships with our growers and harvesters to learn all we can about the origin and production processes of our foods. We are proud of our producers' skills and knowledge and our partnership with them. Together we make every effort to ensure that our foods reach customers in their optimal nutritional state.
Organically produced food tastes better, we feel, and so we are delighted that our foods are certified organic by the Soil Association. While we love local food and are committed to reducing our company's carbon footprint where possible, we have chosen to import our products because their unique nutritional credentials are simply not available elsewhere in the world.
We don't use air freight unless we must: instead we ship our products by sea, which means long distances but low carbon generation. We use attractively labelled cardboard drums and glass jars to preserve the goodness of our products and endeavour to optimise re-use, reduction and recycling in all our packaging.
As a mother to four young children, I know that a diet rich in unprocessed whole foods keeps my family healthy and happy. Experience has shown me that complementing a few meals and snacks with nature's 'wonderfoods' - such as green barley leaf and Manuka honey - is a very convenient way of getting goodness into our bodies.
I believe that the usual Western diet is increasingly failing to deliver the level of nutrition that a modern lifestyle demands. Learning about healthy food enables us to make conscious, informed choices about what we eat, while choosing to supplement our diet with functional foods can bring us closer to sustainable wellbeing.
