What is Zinc and what does it do?
Zinc is the second most abundant trace mineral in the body, being present in all
tissues. (Iron is the most abundant.)
Zinc has a variety of functions. It is related to the normal absorption and action of
vitamins, especially the B complex. It is a constituent of more than 2000 enzymes
involved in digestion and metabolism. Some of the enzymes are involved in bone
metabolism, alcohol detoxification, protein digestion and RNA synthesis. Zinc is a
component of insulin and is part of the enzyme that is needed to break down
alcohol. It is essential in the synthesis of DNA, the master substance of life that
carries all inherited traits and directs the activity of each cell.
Best Natural Sources
Soil exhaustion and the processing of food adversely affect the zinc value of the food
we eat. The best sources of all trace elements in proper balance are natural,
unprocessed foods. Diets high in protein, whole-grain products, brewers yeast, wheat
bran, wheat germ, herring, pumpkin and squash seeds are usually high in zinc.
Absorption and Storage
Zinc is readily absorbed in the upper and small intestine. Absorption is only as much
as the body needs at the time. The rest is unabsorbed and about 6mg is lost daily.
Absorption is lessened when large amounts of calcium are taken. Zinc, cadmium,
silver and copper share and compete for the same absorption sites in the small
intestine. Too much fibre will not allow zinc to be used because it binds and
carries zinc away before it can be accepted by the absorption sites.
The largest store of zinc occurs in the liver, pancreas, kidney, bones and voluntary
muscles. A high intake of calcium and phytic acid, found in certain grains, may
prevent absorption of zinc.
RDA and Dosage
The RDA for Zinc is 15mg.
Supplementary forms of zinc are zinc sulphate, zinc acetate, zinc gluconate, zinc
citrate, amino acid chelates of zinc, zinc dipicolinate, zinc aspartate, zinc orotate
and Food State zinc.
Food State Zinc and Copper
Food State zinc is combined with copper to prevent a possible risk of copper
deficiency during long-term usage. Zinc and copper compete for the same
absorption sites and excess of zinc can ultimately cause a copper deficiency.
Cytoplan Zinc Orotate
Of all the mineral salts, orotate formulations are the best absorbed. Zinc orotate
is used for people who have a need for zinc but whose copper levels are known to
be high. It is often used to help eliminate heavy metals such as copper, cadmium.
and lead from the body.
