Selenium is an essential trace mineral. It is primarily required for the formation of Glutathione Peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme, which protects body cells against oxidative damage by free radicals. Free radicals are harmful particles produced in the body as a natural consequence of metabolism and environmental sources e.g. stress, ageing, smoking, pollution.
Selenium functions synergistically in the body with Vitamin E as a potent antioxidant, preventing the oxidation of lipids (fats). It is an essential cofactor for the antioxidant enzyme Glutathione Peroxidase. This enzyme uses reduced Gluathione and catalyses the reduction of both organic and hydrogen peroxides, which are converted into water. In excess amounts these peroxides can cause oxidation and damage to the cellular membranes of every cell in the body, cellular membranes are mainly composed of lipids. Selenium promotes healthy immune function as it is involved in the production of antibodies and also stimulates increased antibody response to infection. It also plays an important role in protecting and maintaining the functions of vital body organs such as the heart, liver, pancreas and thyroid glands, its availability has been shown to affect concentrations of Glutathione Peroxidase in the liver. Studies show that Selenium plays a very important role in preventing certain tumours and cancer. Selenium deficiency has been linked to liver impairment, pancreatic disorders, infections, cancer and heart disease.
