Vitex Agnus Castus, also known as the Chaste tree, grows in the Mediterranean Countries and Western Asia. The hormonal actions of Vitex has been recognised since ancient times and over recent years many documented studies have been carried out on Vitex in Germany and the UK to evaluate its properties. Agnusides is one of the main active constituents isolated in Vitex, belonging to a group of compounds called Iridoids. The dried ripe fruit of the Herb is commonly used in herbal preparations.
Vitex is commonly used to treat menstrual problems and other problems resulting from hormone imbalance syndromes including premenstrual problems, certain menopausal conditions, insufficient lactation and acne. Modern research has shown that the action of Vitex is at the highest level of hormonal control, the pituitary of the brain. It increases the production of luteinizing hormone, which in turn increases the production of progesterone and helps to regulate the menstrual cycle. Vitex also regulates prolactin secretion.
